At Denver convention, pro-life group equates abortion with Holocaust
By Natasha Mozgovaya, Haaretz Correspondent

DENVER, COLORADO - For years, national conventions in the United States have been a favorite spot for activists from the farthest fringes of the American political spectrum to appear before the media, ensuring their message is broadcast, or at least ridiculed, around the globe.

This year the streets of Denver, Colorado will host veteran American anarchists, radical environmentalists, Falun Gong followers, and even a group committed to placing a prohibition on bird pornography. Well, not quite, but a group of animal activists protesting near the convention are comparing the caging of birds to a sort of perverted voyeurism, ornithology porn if you will.

For many walking the streets of the mile-high city during the convention the most jarring sight may well be the protestors carrying giant posters plastered with photos of aborted fetuses.

The campaign is the brainchild of the Christian Defense Coalition, who call it "Barack Obama: The Abortion President."

One photo, which succeeded to anger many passersby, showed a dead fetus splayed across an American flag with the slogan "Abortion - American Holocaust," written underneath.

"We understand that some people, especially Jewish people, might be hurt by that, but the truth is that both Jews were denied the right to live and were slaughtered during the Holocaust, and so are those babies," one of the activists from the Christian Defense Coalition told Haaretz.

The activist, 22-year-old Crystal Golden, added: "The baby that was thought to be dead in Israel and later recovered on the way to grave proves that they want to live and capable to survive. Some of our activists heard from people that those posters put them back to painful memories, but we need to speak for those children."

Other pro-life groups have descended on Denver, with the well-known Operation Rescue driving around the city in its "truth trucks", large moving-trucks covered in panels showing photos of dismembered fetuses moments after being removed from the womb and others that mock the famous Uncle Sam recruitment poster, with Obama in star-spangled attire pointing and saying "Obama wants YOU! To pay for abortion!"

In the non-abortion rights sphere, a group of activists from an organization calling itself "Make Peace With Iran," have set up protests in Denver, in the wake of recent statements made by Senator Obama on the subject of Iran, including that the world must "tighten the screws on Iran," in response to the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

The Israel Project, a non-profit educational organization launched a major TV and print campaign at the Convention, which attempts to shed light on the threat Israel faces from a nuclear Iran.

The ad says: "Imagine Denver under missile attack from nearby Boulder.
Since 2005, Israel has been targeted by 8,000 rocket and missile attacks from Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran has helped fund, train and arm these terrorist groups. A nuclear Iran is a threat to peace, emboldens extremists "and could give nuclear materials to terrorists with the ability to strike - anywhere. The world's leaders can peacefully prevent a nuclear Iran. The time to act is now."

The Israel Project, which also plans to send a team of activists to the Republican National Convention next week in Minneapolis, Minnesota, brought a team of 22 people on site at both conventions to distribute materials about both the threat posed by Iran and the opportunities of alternative energy.

They also distributed fliers detailing gay and lesbian rights in Israel, as well as the rights of Israeli Arab women.

"We work as well in Europe, but here the reaction is different, much less negative," said Israel Project activist Fabian Cohen from Brussels.

"Basically, the reactions are positive, but sometimes people don't understand why do they need to know anything about Israel, and ask why we are giving them this material. 'Just to inform you,' we say."
