Israel Corp buys solar energy firm HelioFocus
By Avi Bar-Eli
Tags: Israel

The big tycoons continue to invest in renewable energy: The Israel Corporation's subsidiary IC Green Energy has bought control of American-Israeli startup HelioFocus for $5 million to $6 million.

HelioFocus develops a unique technology for utilizing solar energy: "concentrated solar power systems" based on technology from and cooperation with the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot.

The company is privately-owned by a group of investors and the firm's founders. The technology is based on micro-turbine engines powered by concentrated solar rays. HelioFocus was founded in 2007 and uses technology developed by Prof. Jacob Karni of the Weizmann Institute, one of the world's leading experts in solar energy.

IC Green Energy (ICG) is a subsidiary of the Ofer family's Israel Corporation, and is the holding company's green energy arm in Israel. ICG's CEO is Maj. Gen. (res.) Yom-Tov Samia. The company focus is primarily on renewable energy sources such as biofuel: biodiesel and ethanol, solar energy and the production of biofuel and energy from biomass. The company was mentioned in the news recently as considering participation in the tenders for solar power plants in the Negev.

Sammy and Idan Ofer's investment in renewable energy is the most recent in a long list of Israeli tycoons: Joseph Maiman has invested in ethanol and natural gas initiatives through his companies Merhav and Ampal. Nochi Dankner's Clal Industries, which belongs to the IDB group, is planning on participating in the Negev solar tenders and has established with Ampal a wind-power initiative; as well as others including Matthew Bronfman, David Azrieli and Shlomo Shmeltzer.
