The Search for Rose / Leading psychologist: Suspected murderer is antisocial, but not insane
By Yuval Azoulay

Ronny Ron, who is suspected of killing his four-year-old granddaughter, Rose Pizem, suffers from an "antisocial personality disorder," according to senior psychologist Prof. Zvi Zemishlany.

But Zemishlany, who heads the Geha Psychiatric Hospital in Petah Tikva, added that even without being personally acquainted with the details of the case, he could say with a high degree of certainty that Ron does not suffer from actual mental illness, and therefore will not be able to plead temporary insanity.

According to the Israel Psychiatric Association, temporary insanity is possible only if a person is mentally ill, and being antisocial is not considered a mental illness. Ron's "original sin" did not begin with the murder, Zemishlany explained. "It began with the affair he had with his daughter-in-law. This attests to a lack of boundaries, a lack of conscience and impulsiveness. The very fact that he began such an affair attests to yielding to his urges, and a lack of values and conscience. Here we have all the characteristics of an antisocial man."

He added that is is hard to say whether another aspect of the 45-year-old Ron's history - the fact that he had a child so young and became a grandfather in his early 40s - had any direct bearing on his actions.

Because antisocial disorder is not defined as a mental illness, Zemishlany said, the psychiatric services generally find out about such people only after they commit some extreme act.

"But this doesn't mean that people with such a disorder go around murdering," he added. "Murder is an extreme case. In most cases, they get into trouble at work, or get involved in crime, robbery or theft."

"There's no issue here of a troubled conscience," Zemishlany noted. Thus, had Ron not been caught, "it's possible that he would have had no problem living with [the murder] all his life."
