Carter shunted to sidelines at Democratic Convention
By Haaretz Service
Tags: Carter, Obama, Kennedy

On a night that belonged to Jimmy Carter's old political rival Edward Kennedy, the outspoken former president was shunted to the sidelines during the opening of the Democratic National Convention, in apparent concern over past Carter comments.

Carter's appearance Monday was limited largely to a videotaped segment showing the ex-president speaking in praise of Barack Obama and interviewing victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The segment was in stark contrast with the adulation accorded the ailing Kennedy, who was also the focus of enthusiastic and emotional support in 1980 after he lost the nomination to Carter.

In recent years, Carter's critical views on Israel, and his book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, have drawn bitter condemnation from U.S. Jews, many of them confirmed Democratic voters.

The Obama campaign, meanwhile, has been keen to project a pro-Israel image in the face of a prolonged and large-scale e-mail campaign which has accused the Democratic candidate of being pro-Palestinian and a closet Muslim.

But past Carter remarks on Obama came back to haunt the former president as well. The Associated Press published a Then and Now box in which it contrasted Carter's Monday praise for Obama with remarks Carter made, noting that "He wasn't always so charitable:"

NOW

"Barack Obama's been out here (in areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina) to reach out to people and he has deep awareness of what's going on in the Gulf region. His deep religious faith and his background as someone who's come from nowhere, you might say, to a high position in the political world, all of that I think bodes well for America. ... I don't have any doubt that when we have a Democrat back in the White House this January, Barack Obama, he will make sure this never happens again." Monday, in videotaped remarks aired at the Democratic National Convention.

THEN
"I just don't think he's got yet the proven substance or experience to be the president." Nov. 30, 2006, on "The Charlie Rose Show."
