Seven Palestinians arrested for playing cops in Jerusalem
By Jonathan Lis
Tags: Palestinians, Shuafat

Seven Palestinians from the Shuafat refugee camp in north-eastern Jerusalem were arrested two weeks ago on suspicion of operating a Palestinian police unit in the capital.

The suspects, whose arrest was banned for publication until yesterday, allegedly identified themselves as Palestinian policemen and acted for the Palestinian Authority (PA) within Jerusalem, in violation of the Oslo agreement.

As part of this activity, the suspects allegedly threatened people in the Old City area, and even kidnapped certain persons and children to the Palestinian police headquarters in Ramallah for questioning on various suspicions. These people were returned to Jerusalem after being questioned by Palestinian officials.

The seven are also suspected of making ammunition deals with an Israeli citizen living near Jerusalem.

On July 22, the Palestinian unit allegedly stopped a vehicle belonging to a widow from Beit Hanina, took her two children age 5 and 9 out of the car and kidnapped them to Ramallah, where the family of the widow's late husband lives.

The children were taken to the Ramallah governor's mansion and were returned to their mother only after she was forced to sign, in the governor's presence, a paper regulating visiting rights for the husband's family with the children.

Police arrested one of the suspect's attorneys and questioned him about his alleged involvement in the two children's kidnapping.
