Paul Auster: David Grossman is the greatest man I've ever known
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: David Grossman, Paul Auster

American author Paul Auster has dedicated his latest novel Man in the Dark to Israeli novelist David Grossman and his family.

Grossman's son Uri died in combat in the 2006 Second Lebanon War, and the family's grief played an important role in the direction taken by Auster's book.

Uri's death in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah took on somewhat symbolic dimensions in much of the world due to his father's prominence in the literary world and his public role as a peace activist. It was made even more poignant with this year's release of Grossman's new book, most of which written before the Second Lebanon War.

The book, Woman flees Tidings, tells the story of a woman who travels the country to avoid the possibility of receiving news of her son's death in the army.
