Start of Palestinian school year marred by strike in Gaza By DPA GAZA - The beginning of the Palestinian school year yesterday was marred by a strike in the Hamas-administered Gaza Strip, where teachers loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas declared a five day work-stoppage. Teachers Union Secretary-General Jameel Shehada said the strike was aimed to protest "the actions Hamas took against the teachers." Advertisement He said Hamas police took over the building belonging to the Palestine Liberation Organization-affiliated Teachers' Union, fired some employees of the education ministry, and transferred several teachers to remote schools. Hamas interior ministry official Mohammed Abu Shuqair said in response that the building's takeover was not connected to the "education process" and that the teachers were moved because of a "legal procedure." Hamas is expected to appoint its own teachers to replace those who went on strike. The movement has already appointed Hamas loyalists as headmasters in most schools. Meanwhile, the secretary general of Islamic Jihad group arrived in Cairo yesterday for talks with Egyptian officials in a new round of inter-Palestinian dialogue. Ramadan Shalah was one of several officials, representing various Palestinian groups, who were expected in Egypt for talks under Egyptian mediation, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.
