Still aiming for 2008 peace deal, Rice heads to Israel, West Bank
By The Associated Press

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to the Middle East on Sunday for peace talks with senior Israeli and Palestinian officials.

The U.S. State Department issued a statement Friday saying that Rice will be visiting the Middle East to discuss ongoing efforts to create positive and lasting peace in the region and progress toward the shared goal of a peace agreement in 2008.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert earlier this month told the Palestinian government of President Mahmoud Abbas that he would free some of the 9,000 Palestinian prisoners currently held by Israel to help energize peace talks.

The peace talks started with great fanfare at a U.S.-sponsored conference in Annapolis, Maryland last November.

Olmert and Abbas had hoped to reach peace agreement by the end of the year, though both sides have scaled back those expectations.
