Russia plans to pull out of Georgia buffer zone by Friday evening

A senior Russian military official said on Thursday Moscow would pull back its forces behind the buffer zone within Georgia by the end of Friday, August 22.

"The pullback has started at such a pace that by the end of August 22 all the forces of the Russian Federation will be behind the line of our zone of responsibility," Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian military's General Staff, told a news conference.

A Russian armored column has begun pulling back from Georgian territory towards Russia, the Interfax news agency reported on Thursday.

The convoy, consisting of more than 40 vehicles including tanks, multiple launch rocket systems and armored personnel carriers, passed through the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali at about 9 A.M Moscow time and proceeded towards the Russian border, Interfax reported.

Interfax had earlier said that the column had come from the key Georgian town of Gori, but later corrected its report to drop the reference to Gori.

It said, however, that it stood by the report of the column moving back from Georgian territory through South Ossetia towards Russia.
