News in Brief

Offenders convicted of hijacking a naval vessel can expect a prison sentence of up to 20 years, following a Knesset vote to introduce stiffer sentencing against terrorist activities at sea. Assault or vandalism aboard naval vessels could mean up to 15 years. Under the new law, ship captains enjoy a substantial increase in power over passengers, including the authority to arrest, interrogate and frisk seafarers. Chairman of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, MK Menachem Ben-Sasson (Kadima) said the new law replaced and cemented emergency directives concerning safety at sea. (Shahar Ilan)

The mother of a missing Israeli soldier spoke out in harsh terms yesterday against suggestions by police officers that the family is withholding information that could shed new light on the disappearance of Guy Hever in the Golan Heights in 1997. "Destructive and malicious words," Rina Hever told Haaretz in reference to quotes by anonymous police sources quoted in daily Yedioth Ahronoth as saying that "there remain question marks pertaining to the nature of the relationship that Guy Hever had with his parents." She said she thought the "speculations" began after she refused to meet a new investigator working on the case. "They had no new information and I saw no point in meeting them," she said. The killing of a 17-year-old Palestinian boy late last month will be the subject of an independent probe by the Justice Ministry's Police Investigations Department, Haaretz has learned. The probe was launched following a query on the subject by the human rights group B'Tselem. Yousef Amira was killed after soldiers from the IDF and Border Police opened fire on him and other Palestinians demonstrators who were protesting the killing of 10-year-old Ahmed Moussa the previous day. In both cases, the soldiers suspected of shooting the slain Palestinians were arrested. (Jonathan Lis)

Israel does not allow the transfer of bicycles into Gaza, Haaretz has learned. An official document obtained from the Tax Authority gives a negative response to request from a man in the Gaza Strip who sought to import kid's bicycles. The crossings into Gaza are to remain closed to all traffic until the Defense Ministry concludes a discussion scheduled for today in which officials will consider reopening the crossings into the Strip and allow goods to pass. The checkpoints were sealed yesterday because of rocket fire into Israel. (Mijal Grinberg)
