West Galilee Hospital's newest donor is a 9-year-old boy
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

Take a 9-year-old boy, put NIS 3,000 in his hand, and try to imagine what he will do with the money. Fancy Playstation? Clothes at the mall? Fifth grader Daniel Abitbul from Nahariya had other plans.

Abitbul donated that sum to the children's ward of Nahariya's West Galilee Hospital.

Some two weeks ago, Abitbul gathered all his toys and set up a sales booth on Nahariya's main street. He posted a sign on the booth declaring that all the proceeds from the sale of the toys will be donated to the hospital's children ward.

His parents, Meir and Kochi, supported their son's idea and helped him set up his booth. Last weekend, after most of the toys had been purchased, Daniel realized that he had earned NIS 1,500. His parents decided to match the amount their son had earned in a show of support for his efforts.

West Galilee Hospital Director Dr. Mas'ad Barhum summoned Abitbul to his office earlier this week and thanked him for his unusual generosity. "I can't help but be impressed by Daniel's actions," Barhum said. "I wanted to meet him and thank him personally. Children his age with such high social awareness are rare."

Daniel arrived at the hospital, escorted by his mother and sister, carrying a check for NIS 3,000 and a box full of the remaining toys, which Daniel wanted to donate to the children's ward play room.

During their meeting, Dr. Barhum thanked Daniel and his family for their initiative. "The money, that will be used to improve the welfare of the sick children, is important, but not the most important. The central thing in this story is Daniel's idea and actions," Barhum concluded.
