Safed toddler, teen, hospitalized after taking dangerous medications
By Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Safed, dangerous medication

A one-year-old toddler and a 15-year-old girl were taken to Rebecca Sieff hospital in Safed in separate incidents Wednesday, after both took dangerous medications found in their homes.

The two are in serious but stable condition in the hospital's children's intensive care unit.

In the first incident, the toddler swallowed psychiatric medicine found in his house in the country's north. He was taken to the hospital in very serious condition, and was found to have serious poisoning in his blood that almost caused him to die. After undergoing intensive care, the medical team reported the toddler to be out of immediate danger.

The teenage girl arrived at the same hospital later Wednesday, in a state of unconsciousness. Poison was also discovered in her blood, as well as the failure of all her vital organs. After her family had been questioned and all the medical checks were dealt with, it became clear that she had taken a large quantity of the anti-tuberculosis medicine used by her parents. She is still in serious, albeit stable, condition.

Following the two incidents the hospital said there is a disturbing trend of parents not properly storing their medication, and of exposing them to children. The manager of the intensive care department at the hospital, Dr Yuri Viener, said "This constitutes a perceptible danger to the lives of children and young people."
