VIDEO / Who will represent Israel at the opening of the UN General Assembly?
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: Ehud Olmert, UN, Israel

The annual United Nations General Assembly is around the corner, but it is presently unclear who will represent Israel at the opening of the 63rd session.

The prime minister generally addresses the international community in New York. But this year, a Kadima primary will coincide with the opening of the session and will result in a replacement for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

s foreign minister, Tzipi Livni is a natural stand-in for Olmert at the assembly, but she is currently a top contender in the primary. Should she win, she is likely to be too busy trying to form a government to fly to New York.

Another natural choice is President Shimon Peres, but he too will be needed in Israel in order to formally ask the winner of the primary to form a new government.

Considering the timing, sources say there is a good chance that Olmert will indeed travel to New York to represent Israel, despite the fact that his premiership will possibly be only days away from ending.
