IDF commander kept in post 3 months after accused of raping mentally challenged volunteer
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: Israel, IDF, Akim

The Israel Defense Forces kept Sgt. Maj. Moshe Moridan, a senior regiment commander, in his post for three months after he had been accused of raping a mentally challenged woman volunteering in the army, it emerged Monday.

Moridan was in charge of a group of handicapped people given the opportunity to volunteer in the IDF in cooperation with the non-profit Akim.

Roughly three months ago, a volunteer reported to a counselor that the commander had raped another volunteer in a storeroom. A police report was filed, and the case moved to the criminal investigation division of the Israel Defense Force.

But for three months, Moridor stayed in his post, where he is suspected of having threatened the volunteer to keep her from reporting the incident. He was arrested last week only after Channel 10 inquired as to how the case was proceeding. A military court extended his remand until Thursday.
