Wo rld News in Brief

A car bomb exploded yesterday as Shi'ite pilgrims were boarding minibuses in Baghdad, killing at least six people, officials said, in a third straight day of attacks on travelers heading to a religious ceremony in Karbala. Despite the violence, hundreds of thousands of worshippers streamed toward the twin golden-domed mosques of Karbala, a Shi'ite religious center 50 miles south of Baghdad. Men and women filed through separate gates to be searched. The explosives-laden car blew up at about 9 A.M. in Baghdad's mainly Shi'ite district of Shaab. (AP)

Lebanon's foreign minister says he expects diplomatic ties with Syria to be fully established and ambassadors to be exchanged within two months. Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh says the Lebanese Cabinet will approve the measure next week. Salloukh spoke in an interview with AP yesterday, two days after the presidents of Lebanon and Syria agreed to establish full diplomatic ties for the first time since the two countries gained independence from France more than 60 years ago. The two countries also agreed to negotiate the demarcation of their border. (AP)

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf should quit within two days or prepare to be impeached, a top ruling party member said yesterday as officials mulled over a draft of charges against the embattled Pakistani leader. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi's comments added to the mounting pressure on the former army chief, but an ally of Musharraf insisted the president was not stepping down and was prepared to fight impeachment charges he considers absurd. The back-and-forth injected more uncertainty into the already volatile situation in Pakistan. (AP)

An Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets yesterday in the coastal city of Alexandria after taking fertility drugs to produce a son, a hospital director said. Ghazala Khamis, 27, was in good condition at the hospital after having a blood transfusion during her Caesarean section due to bleeding, said Emad Darwish, director of the El-Shatbi Hospital where she gave birth. The newborns, four boys and three girls, are in stable condition, Darwish said. In similar news, a woman in southern Iraq gave birth today to sextuplets, but only two infants survived. (AP)
