Soccer / UEFA Cup / Israeli teams manage 3 draws, 1 goal
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Three Israeli teams were in UEFA Cup action last night. Only one of them managed to score a goal and none of them recorded a victory against inferior opposition. All the games were being played in the second qualifying round of the competition

In the first match of the night, Hapoel Tel Aviv, which traveled to Serbia, played out a goalless draw against Vojvodina Novi Sad, in what coach Eli Guttman described as "the worst match we have played since we began pre-season training."

During the course of the 90 minutes, Hapoel failed to create a single goal-scoring opportunity of note, and the home team outplayed the visitors for much of the game.

Even though the return leg will be played in Israel, Guttman was not pleased. "We can't rely on home-ground advantage to see us through," he warned, "because if we play like we did tonight, we'll lose at home, too."

There was another goalless draw for fans to "enjoy" in the second match involving an Israeli club. This time, it was Ironi Kiryat Shmona that failed to break down stubborn opponents, in the shape of Litex Lovech of Bulgaria.

So lifeless was the game, in fact, that it took an hour of play before Kiryat Shmona managed its first real attack of the match. Kwabena Aguda managed to get his head to a speculative cross by Guy Tzarfati, but his header landed harmlessly in the arms of the Litex goalkeeper.

There was slightly better news for fans of Maccabi Netanya, however, as their team did manage to score a goal - Francis Kioyo poking home from inside the penalty area in the 27th minute - but an equalizer from Alex three minutes before the interval gave visitors Cherno More Varna, also of Bulgaria, an away goal that could prove invaluable in the return leg in two weeks.

The game was the first in charge for Netanya's new coach, German World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus, who will have been far from pleased by his charges' lackluster and profligate performance.

In other games last night, English Premier League side Aston Villa scored an impressive road victory over Hafnarfjordur of Iceland, while FC Copenhagen overcame Lillestrom, 3-1.
