EU: Syria-Israel talks could boost Europe's Mideast ties
By The Associated Press
Tags: Europe, Israel, Syria

The EU parliament chief late Sunday praised renewed Syria-Israel peace talks and an upcoming meeting between the Syrian and Lebanese presidents as positive moves that could boost Europe's ties with the region.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Hans-Gert Pottering said he wants to encourage Syria-Israel peace talks until there can finally be bilateral negotiations between the two adversaries.

Syria and Israel have held several rounds of indirect peace talks recently through Turkish mediators. But they have no formal diplomatic ties.

Lebanon's president is scheduled to travel to Syria on Wednesday. It will be the first such visit by a Lebanese head of state since Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2005.

Pottering said last week European officials are ready to be involved as honest brokers in the negotiations between Israel and Syria whenever it is felt to be appropriate.

Pottering made the comments on Thursday, after talks with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and other Lebanese officials. On Friday he traveled to south Lebanon to meet with United Nations peacekeeping troops on the ground.
