News in Brief

The departure of human rights activists planning to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip has been delayed, due to technical problems on the ships with which they plan to sail into Gaza. Several of the Free Gaza Movement members are in Crete, where the SS Liberty and SS Free Gaza are anchored. They hope to set sail Thursday or early next week, said Jeff Halper, an Israeli-American anthropologist and the only Israeli planning to board the ships. (Ofri Ilani)

Egypt sent around 500 riot police to its border with the Gaza Strip yesterday, fearing that supporters of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas will try to storm the frontier, security officials said. The officials said Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, called for a rally on the Palestinian side of the border town of Rafah. "Early this morning 500 policemen were sent to the area around Rafah crossing and along the border between Egypt and Gaza," one official said. He said more security forces were stationed in the area and would be called upon if necessary. (Reuters)
