World Briefs Diplomats: Syria turns away IAEA Advertisement Syria has blocked a new visit by International Atomic Energy Agency experts seeking to follow up on intelligence that Damascus was hiding a nuclear program built with the help of North Korea, diplomats told AP yesterday. The diplomats also said Washington was circulating a note among members of the IAEA board opposing a Syrian push for a seat on the 35-nation board. The board normally works by consensus and a seat held by Damascus could thus hamper any investigation into its alleged nuclear activities. Syria fears a massive atomic agency investigation similar to the probe Iran has been subjected to for more than five years. (AP) U.S. coach's relative murdered in Beijing Two Americans closely linked to the U.S. Olympic volleyball team were stabbed, one fatally, in a bizarre attack yesterday atop an ancient landmark in the Chinese capital on the first day of the Beijing Games. The knife-wielding assailant, a Chinese man, then committed suicide by throwing himself from a balcony of the 13th century Drum Tower. Todd Bachman, the father of former Olympic volleyballer Elisabeth Wiz Bachman and the father-in-law of men's volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon, was slain in the attack, the U.S. Olympic Committee said. His wife, Barbara, sustained life-threatening injuries. (AP) Death toll hits 25 in Iraqi market bomb The death toll from a blast in a market in the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar rose to 25 yesterday after four of the six dozen people injured died from their wounds, a security official said. The predominantly ethnic Turkoman town was under an indefinite curfew a day after Friday's bombing. Initial reports said a parked car was used in the attack. The bomber may have avoided detection at a checkpoint leading to the busy market by having a man ride with him in the passenger seat, said the official. The passenger got off soon after the car passed the checkpoint, he added. (AP) Actor and comedian Bernie Mac, 50 Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper Ocean's Eleven and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, died yesterday at age 50. "Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said. The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.
