Putin to Peres: Russia doesn't want a nuclear armed Iran
By Yossi Melman, Haaretz Correspondent

BEIJING - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told President Shimon Peres that Russia was unequivocally opposed to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, as the two met in Beijing this weekend at the Russian leader's request.

The request for the meeting was made during a reception for visiting world leaders, hosted by Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The meeting took place while Russian forces were involved in heavy fighting in Georgia, a country to which Israel has sold military equipment in the past.

One subject that was discussed was Iran, and Putin noted after the meeting that, "I am not indifferent to Israel's concerns over a nuclear-armed Iran. There should be no doubt that Russia does not want a nuclear Iran."

Peres said that "a situation in which Iran has nuclear weapons and is involved in terrorism should concern all the countries of the world, not only Israel."

Putin did say that his country supports direct dialogue with Iran because Moscow believes this is the best way of achieving the desired result, which is "preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear arms."

The Russian leader also discussed the progress in the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, and Putin expressed interest in becoming involved in the peace process.

Earlier, Peres met with his Chinese host, President Hu.

Peres reiterated before the Chinese leader that, "Israel is following with grave concern the attempts by Iran to develop nuclear arms," and said that China can be a bigger player in the effort to dissuade Tehran from its bid for nuclear arms and its backing of terrorism.

"Israel does not wish to destroy Iran and does not threaten it," Peres said. "We want peace and stability in the Middle East, free of nuclear arms and terrorism."

Hu said that China was following developments in the Middle East and said Beijing would continue playing a constructive role, bolstering China's contribution and involvement for regional stability and peace.
