McCain forced to forgo illegal funds from Palestinian donors

However, it has now become clear that the money was actually raised by Sargeant's Jordanian business partner, Mustapha Abu Naba.

Campaign finance records show that McCain collected a little more than $50,000 in March from the extended family of Faisel Abdullah, a Palestinian immigrant and resident of California, and the CEO of a window repair company.

Several of the checks exceeded $2,300, the maximum payment permitted by law from a single donor, while some of the donors said they did not even like McCain and only contributed out of respect for Abdullah.

Spokesman on behalf of the McCain campaign said the regulations were met during the fundraising procedure, but that the campaign would still reexamine its donations to "ensure that they are worthy."

Business ties with Jordanian royalty

Sargeant, a former U.S. military man with business ties in the Middle East, made headlines a few months ago when charges were filed against him in a Florida court for allegedly withholding oil shares from Muhammad Anwar Farid al-Salah, a Jordanian businessman and relative of Jordan's King Abdullah.

Al-Salah claimed that he had been denied his part in the profits of Sargeant's International Oil Trading Company - profits that have drastically increased in recent years due to the company's charter with the Pentagon, whereby it is responsible for the shipping through Jordan of fuel to American airplanes stationed in Iraq.

Sargeant said in response that the Jordanian deal was not in any way connected to the McCain donations, and that it was merely a "business dispute" that is being settled in court.
