News in Brief

Police investigators will interview Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at his official residence in Jerusalem today, for the fifth time in recent weeks. Today's meeting is expected to focus on suspicions that Olmert received illegal financial contributions from American fund-raiser Morris Talansky. The investigators will also ask about the case of the alleged double billing. (Jonathan Lis)

A former adviser to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert from his days as industry and trade minister was questioned yesterday by the police's National Fraud Squad. Eldad Rothman is suspected of a series of appointments of cronies in positions at the ministry and elsewhere. Rothman was placed under house arrest after questioning and agreed to remain under house arrest until the completion of today's questioning of Olmert. Rothman is the husband of Noa Ben-Artzi, granddaughter of late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. He is also the son of Shlomo Rothman, the chairman of the Israel Electric Corporation. (Jonathan Lis)

A Sheba Medical Center employee was killed after she had a heart attack while driving in the parking garage and slammed her car into a wall. Witnesses saw the woman, 60, suddenly veer into the cement wall at around 4 P.M. yesterday, and called medical teams and hospital doctors to the scene. She was taken inside in critical condition, and died shortly thereafter. Preliminary tests indicate she died from the damage to her heart, not from the impact of the crash. (Roni Singer-Heruti)

A small group of settlers attacked a delegation of British diplomats during a visit to the West Bank city of Hebron yesterday, the British Consulate said. The diplomats were attacked while touring the area in an armored car. None were injured. A Palestinian security official in the city said one of the settlers kicked the car after trying to open one of its doors. Israeli police then intervened. The British diplomats were taking part in a tour by Breaking the Silence, led by former soldiers. (Reuters)

Police yesterday requested a remand extension for a Rehovot resident suspected of producing drugs in her home. Following information received by the Rehovot police, detectives arrived at the woman's apartment late Wednesday evening and uncovered 20,000 pills which, according to the police, included a "psychoactive" substance. They also found a liquid that could allegedly be sufficient to produce 1 million pills. But the police admitted that the pills confiscated were unidentified, and apparently were not listed as prohibited drugs. (Roni Singer-Heruti)

Israel, under international pressure to ease curbs on Palestinian movement, opened a roadblock yesterday in the West Bank to commercial traffic. The checkpoint between the city of Hebron and a commercial crossing point into Israel would be open for trucks for six hours a day, the army said. Private vehicles remain banned. Residents said the measure reduces travel time between Hebron and the Tarkumiya crossing to less than 20 minutes from 45. (Reuters)
