Ministers to meet Monday on policy for release of Palestinian prisoners
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Gilad Shalit, Hamas, Gaza

A new ministerial panel will meet on Monday to discuss government policy on the release of Palestinian prisoners.

The committee was formed on Sunday to weigh the matter anew amid negotiations with Hamas for Shalit, who was kidnapped by Gaza militants in a cross-border raid in June 2006.

In the first meeting since its formation, however, the panel on Monday will not broach the divisive issue of changing the criteria to allow for the release of prisoners "with blood on their hands" in return for the abducted soldier. This term refers to those convicted of or directly connected to the killing of Israelis.

Monday's meeting will focus instead on the release of Palestinian prisoners as a gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised to release more than 100 Palestinian prisoners by the end of August as a gesture of good will to Abbas.

Also Wednesday, Shalit's father Noam said his son is holding hostage the entire Gaza Strip and the Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and not the other way around.
