Israeli Arab charged with spying for Hezbollah
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, Hezbollah, Kalansua

Khaled Kashkush, a 29-year-old Israeli Arab resident of the town of Kalansua, is suspected of spying for Hezbollah, it was revealed Wednesday after the Shin Bet security service lifted a media gag order.

Kashkush, who was arrested last month, was served with an indictment Wednesday morning at a court in Petah Tikva. He is suspected of receiving a payment of 13,000 euros from a Lebanese handler whom he met while completing his studies in Germany.

Investigators say Kashkush, a medical student who was studying in the German city of Gutingen, held contacts with Dr. Hisham Hassan, the head of a charitable organization believed linked with Hezbollah. The Shin Bet believes that Hassan introduced Kashkush to a Hezbollah handler, Mohammed Hashem, towards the end of 2005. Hashem and Kashkush are believed to have maintained contact in the years since.

Authorities accuse Kashkush of supplying Hezbollah with information on other Arab Israelis who would be willing to provide the Shi'ite group with intelligence. Kashkush is also alleged to have gathered data on Israeli security personnel and is also said to have applied for a job at a hospital where he could also get his hands on sensitive information.

Hezbollah operatives are believed to have instructed Kashkush on ways to avoid detection by authorities. He was arrested by security officials at Ben-Gurion Airport upon his return to Israel.

In recent years, Hezbollah has boosted efforts in enlisting Israeli Arabs as agents for purposes of gathering intelligence or to carry out terrorist attacks in Israel. Earlier this year, an Israel Defense Forces tracker was accused of divulging military intelligence to Hezbollah in order to facilitate the smuggling of illicit drugs from Lebanon into Israel.
