Abbas to urge Olmert: Free Palestinians jailed before Oslo
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent, and Reuters

The Palestinian Authority will request that Israel release prisoners who have been incarcerated since before the signing of the Oslo Accords.

The issue is expected to be raised during discussions on Wednesday between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the premier's official residence in Jerusalem.

During the meeting, which is slated to focus on the latest political developments in Israel, Olmert is expected to offer ideas aimed at facilitating progress in peace negotiations despite the prime minister's domestic troubles.

"The president will raise a number of issues, such as the permanent-status issues, checkpoints and prisoners," top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.

Olmert and Abbas met last month in Paris during the Union for the Mediterranean Summit, during which they discussed the future of peace negotiations.

In his announcement last week that he intends to resign his post following primaries in the ruling Kadima party, the prime minister declared that he would continue to push forward with the peace process vis-a-vis the Palestinians until he officially steps down.

During three-way talks between Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, top Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qureia, and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were held last week in Washington, Livni and Qureia warned Rice not to force the two sides to present a signed agreement when significant gaps remain on a range of issues.

Rice, for her part, wants to present a diplomatic achievement before the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York next month.
