IDF to boost presence near settlements to deter attacks on Palestinians
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent

Israeli security forces have decided to increase their presence along West Bank settlement routes, in light of recent settler attacks on Palestinians in the area.

The decision was made after settlers last week hurled a brick at a Palestinian car traveling near the Yitzhar settlement, wounding a woman and her 7-year-old daughter.

Civilian authorities allowed the mother and daughter to drive to Tel Aviv for medical treatment at Ichilov Hospital. The two victims, residents of Ramallah, were visiting relatives in Tul Karm and were on their way home when the incident took place.

Recent weeks have seen an upturn in the number of reports of violent incidents against Palestinians by West Bank settlers.

Haaretz has learned that defense authorities in the West Bank sector have instructed the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Police to be on special alert near Yitzhar, as well as near the southern Mount Hebron settlements of Havat Gilad, Adei Ad and Maon, in southern Moutn

"We have clarified and redefined our activities along these routes, in light of recent events. The brick thrown at the Palestinian family's car was just one in a string of events apparently stemming from the side of right-wing activists against the Palestinian population," said a security source in the West Bank."

Following the incident with the brick, the head of the West Bank's Civil Administration, Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai, asked police to open an investigation and arrest suspects in the case.

Police on Sunday arrested a teenager from Yitzhar in connection to the incident.

The youth, 16, has not confessed to involvement, but has admitted to being on the scene at the time of the incident.

Recent weeks have seen an upturn in the number of reports of violent incidents against Palestinians by West Bank settlers.

In an incident last month, a group of settlers were filmed beating a 31-year-old Palestinian man in the southern Hebron Hills, after having tied him to a telephone pole.

In June, the Hebron District Police arrested two Israeli settlers, one of them a minor, on suspicion of attacking Palestinian farmers near the settlement of Susya.

The arrests were made after the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem released a video which it said shows the beginning of an assault by masked, stick-wielding Israeli settlers on Palestinian farmers.

As part of its "Shooting Back" project, B'Tselem has distributed about 100 cameras to Palestinians throughout the West Bank over the last year to document settler attacks against them.
