Kidnapped man turns out to be victim of jealous husband, not robbers
By Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: stabbing, kidnapping, crime

A man who was kidnapped, stabbed and left for dead in a Negev forest was not a robbery victim as first believed, but the victim of a jealous husband and his friends who sought to prevent him from contacting his estranged wife.

Maor Ben Shoshan, 29, was found bleeding on Saturday in the Lahav forest, with no clothes or food. He told police from his hospital bed in Be'er Sheva on Sunday that one of the assailants was an acquaintance of his and that the attackers who abducted him and tried to murder him had only stolen NIS 100.

He said he had been stabbed several times before he played dead and was left in the forest.

Police now believe that Ben Shoshan's acquaintance, Snir Peretz, had plotted with two others to assault and threaten Ben Shoshan, who was involved with Snir's wife.

A third suspect in the case, Ariel Suissa, who was arrested on Sunday, told his attorney that Peretz had told him that Ben Shoshan was trying to persuade his wife to separate from him and that his attempts to get rid of him had failed.

Peretz said the only way to get rid of Ben Shoshan was to scare him off, Suissa said. Peretz told Suissa and another suspect to wear masks and threaten Ben Shoshan. But the incident got out of hand and Snir, Ben Shoshan and the other friend started fighting.

Suissa was brought to court for the extension of his remand on Sunday.

Police said that Ben Shoshan and Peretz had had a "special" relationship and that Ben Shoshan had called Peretz's wife, who is separated from him, several times.

Sources in Soroka Hospital said Ben Shoshan's injuries were not serious.

Professor Solly Mizrahi said Ben Shoshan had suffered cuts, which required stitches, but not deep stabs, so there was no need to operate.

Ben Shoshan's main problem was dehydration, Mizrahi said.

Ben Shoshan told police "they bound me and covered my head and proceeded to kick and beat me, before tying me up and throwing me in the trunk of my car."

He said he had been stabbed five times. Realizing that they wanted to murder him, he played dead. The attackers left him, drove off in Ben Shoshan's car and later torched it in Ofakim.

Ben Shoshan was found by a police contingent after his sister reported him missing.
