Officials investigating threats of Al-Qaida attacks in Europe
By Haaretz Service
Tags: al-masri, al-qaida, terror

Senior European intelligence officials are investigating threats that Al-Qaida may try to attack locations within the European Union.

The threats range from dissemination of propaganda to suicide attacks, and they come in the wake of Al-Qaida's announcement Sunday confirming the death of Abu Khabab al-Masri, one of the organization's top commanders, in an air strike in Pakistan.

Al-Masri was accused of training the suicide bombers who killed 17 American sailors on the USS Cole eight years ago.

The new intelligence efforts will also focus on the Islamic terror group's use of female suicide bombers, and on the group's increased presence in Britain and north Africa.

"This phenomenon has not been taken into account until today," said one diplomat. "We need to investigate it and understand it. We are talking about Al-Qaida's new strategy."

Al-Masri is one of six people who were killed in an American airstrike on July 28 on a compound in South Waziristan, a lawless tribal region near the Afghan border, according to Pakistani authorities.

Al-Masri, an Egyptian whose real name is Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Umar, was also believed to have helped run Al-Qaida's Darunta training camp in eastern Afghanistan until 2001, where he is thought to have conducted experiments with chemical and biological weapons.
