K. Shmona's Amos called to under-21 squad

Kiryat Shmona's South African-born goalkeeper, Danny Amos, has been called up to the Israeli national under-21 squad for the first time in his career. Amos, who has put on a series of superb performances for his team in European competition this season, has attracted the attention of the national team coaches and will be in the under-21 squad for its next training sessions. "Clearly, it's very exciting," he told Haaretz yesterday. "I am proud and I will do everything I can to justify it." (Nir Wolf)

Beitar holds last practice before Polish trip

Beitar Jerusalem players held their final training session in Israel yesterday, ahead of today's flight to Poland, where they will face Wisla Krakow in the second leg of the Champions League qualifying round. The session consisted of a light workout, after which players and coaches watched a recording of the team's 2-1 victory over the Poles in the first leg last week. (Matan Krakow)

Netanya's UEFA Cup tie relocated to Burgas

The second leg of the UEFA Cup qualifying match between Maccabi Netanya and Cherno More will not be played in the Bulgarian team's hometown of Varna, since the only stadium in the town does not meet the standards set by the game's governing body, UEFA. Instead, the game will go ahead on August 28, exactly two weeks after the first leg in Israel, in the Black Sea town of Burgas, located some 130 kilometers from Varna. The stadium in Burgas, which has a capacity of 15,000, is expected to be full for the encounter. (Eli Shvidler)

Brother bother for Ram and Ehrlich

Andy Ram and Yoni Ehrlich lost yesterday in the final of the doubles tournament at the Cincinnati Masters. The Israeli duo was downed 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 by third seeds Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States. The Israeli duo, which led 2-0 in the second set, eventually lost the set on a tiebreak and went on to lose the super-tiebreak 10-7. In Beijing, incidentally, Ram and Ehrlich (seeded second) and the Bryan brothers (first seeds) will be able to meet only in the final. (Rami Hipsh)

Bronze for Banach in Belgrade

Israeli swimmer Yuliya Banach yesterday won a bronze medal at the European Youth Swimming Championships in Belgrade. Banach finished the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:10.90 minutes, behind a swimmer from Russia and a swimmer from Poland. (Rami Hipsh)
