VIDEO / Gov't okays bill to collect citizens photo and fingerprints

Tags: Ehud Olmert, Israel

The government on Sunday approved the first reading of a bill to create a central database of fingerprints and photographs of every Israeli.

The Interior Ministry drafted the law after it had been tasked with creating the database for identity, travel documents and biometric data base, containing data on the entire population.

Speaking at the start of the Sunday cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the law was an "unprecedented revolution" in combating counterfeiting, and would improve government service for Israeli citizens.

Nevertheless, the law is only at an early legislative stage and still needs to pass a preliminary reading in the Knesset plenum.

Olmert added: "What will be done is an integration of biometric elements to create the highest level of accuracy in personal identification known to today's science world."

The prime minister said the new identity card will include an element known as a "smart card," which, in addition to the biometric information, will allow Israeli citizens to contact governmental services digitally and electronically.
