N.Y. governor pays historic visit to Orthodox synagogue for Sabbath services
By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: New York, Westhampton Beach

New York Governor David Paterson has accepted an invitation to participate in Sabbath prayers at the Orthodox synagogue in Westhampton Beach, Long Island, the first time a governor has agreed to be a guest of honor at an Orthodox synagogue.

Paterson, the first African-American governor of the Empire State who has gained a reputation as an advocate for minority rights, is expected to deliver remarks condemning anti-Semitism.

The synagogue rabbi, Mark Schneier, told Haaretz that the governor's presence during Sabbath services is especially significant in light of the public campaign waged by the local congregation to persuade the township to establish an eruv, a communal property arrangement stipulated by Jewish law that would allow, for instance, parents to transport their children with strollers on the Sabbath.

An advertisement in the local newspaper denouncing the congregation's proposal included hostile language against Jews that contained anti-Semitic overtones. Rabbi Schneier likens Paterson's visit to the synagogue as a demonstration of his support for the needs of the congregation.
