A police detective was wounded Tuesday while trying to arrest a group of suspects reportedly affiliated with the Abergil crime syndicate, which police suspect ordered the failed assassination attempt at the Bat Yam promenade this week that left an innocent bystander dead.

The detective, Oded Shafir of the Lachish district police, pursued a group of reputed criminals from Ashdod who police believed were planning on carrying out a shooting at the Kanot junction next to the southern town of Gadera.

Shafir took off after the suspects who fled on an all-terrain vehicle into the fields of a nearby moshav and was lightly injured when he jumped onto a vehicle of the same type that the suspects were driving.
