German broadcaster shuts Gaza office to protest camerman's arrest

German broadcaster ARD shut down its Gaza Strip office Wednesday to protest the arrest of one of its cameramen by the militant Islamic Hamas group that controls the coastal territory.

Masked Hamas gunmen took Sawah Abu Seif from his home during a mass eekend roundup of alleged activists of the rival Fatah movement. Hamas blamed Fatah for an explosion earlier in Gaza City that killed five Hamas members and a 6-year-old girl.

ARD bureau chief Richard C. Schneier told the Associated Press that Abu Seif was not active in Fatah.

Hamas seized control of Gaza from Fatah security forces after bloody street battles last year, leaving Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah ruling only the West Bank.

Each group has arrested its rivals by the hundreds since.

Earlier this week, two human rights groups accused Hamas and Fatah of the widespread torture of political opponents. Schneier said he was very much concerned the 42-year-old cameraman was being abused.

"It's been five days and we got information that the physical condition of Sawah Abu Seif is not very good," Schneier said.

ARDTV in Germany asked its Gaza branch be shut to protest the arrest. A note posted on the locked office Wednesday read in Arabic and English: "The office will stay closed until we have our cameraman back safe to his family and work."

Also on Wednesday, Hamas arrested Imad Eid the director of Maan, the Palestinian news agency in Gaza.

Hamas police and prosecutors said Eid would be interrogated over an article he published that allegedly was pro-Fatah.

The Hamas government has banned all West Bank newspapers from distributing in Gaza since Sunday.
