Police investigate Gaydamak over suspected election bribery
By Haaretz Service
Tags: elections, Israel, Gaydamak

Police have launched an investigation into Russian-Israeli tycoon Arcadi Gaydamak over allegations that he gave bribes in order to garner more votes in upcoming Jerusalem municipal elections.

During an event organized by Gaydamak at his home a few months ago, he allegedly distributed cash to those attending, calling on them to vote for him in the elections.

Police initiated the investigation following a complaint by the Movement for Quality Government. A court ruling has determined that the act did constitute a criminal offense.

The National Serious and International Crimes Unit is conducting the probe. In a separate investigation, the unit is examining suspected money-laundering at the Hayarkon branch of Bank Hapoalim in Tel Aviv, in which the billionaire businessman is also implicated.

Meanwhile, Gaydamak has announced the appointment of former CEO of the president's residence, Arieh Shomer, as head of his election campaign in the race for the Jerusalem municipality elections. Shomer previously ran the election campaign for current Jerusalem mayor, Uri Lupolianski.
