IDF officer suspected of trying to rape woman soldier
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: rape, Israel, IDF

An Israel Defense Forces officer serving in one of the southern command units was arrested earlier this week on suspicion he had attempted to rape one of the female soldiers in his unit.

The officer, who holds the rank of major, told the military court that his relations with the woman had been consensual.

The investigators suspect that the officer had picked the woman up from the gate of their military base last weekend and then drove her to a room he had booked for the two of them. Later that weekend, the woman filed a complaint with the military police maintaining that the officer had tried to rape her.

During the course of the investigation, the officer wrote the complainant a letter of apology. The military police were planning to continue questioning soldiers serving at the base where the suspect holds a senior post, and the complainant also serves.

The officer in custody has taken part in several operations during his military career and was recently wounded in a clash with Palestinian militants. The suspect, a married father of two, has since recovered and returned to his post. On Tuesday, he appeared in court after having removed the rank insignia from his epaulettes.

A gag order has been issued over details of the case, including the suspect's name and other identifying information.

The IDF spokesman's office issued a statement saying that upon the completion of the investigation, the case will be transferred to the Military Advocate General for a verdict on whether to indict.
