Court orders squatters to quit East Jerusalem property at once

The Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday rejected a petition submitted by rightists squatting in an Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem and ordered them to evacuate the premises immediately.

The rightists have been squatting for some time in a seven-story building they call "Beit Yehonatan," in the heart of the Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

The structure was built illegally by the Ateret Cohanim organization, and has been housing seven Jewish families.

It is one of the larger buildings constructed by Jews in East Jerusalem, and the city has been under pressure of late to prevent its evacuation and authorize its continued inhabitance.

But the court has ordered the building evacuated after the Jerusalem municipality submitted an indictment against the squatters.

Meanwhile, a group of right-wing activists on Wednesday entered a home in the Palestinian neighborhood of Ras Hamis in north Jerusalem, declaring ownership of it a Jewish property.

The property measures some 20 dunams and contains a number of caravans. It is apparently owned by Jews, and constitutes part of the so-called "Eastern Gate" compound between the Jewish French Hill neighborhood and the West Bank village of Anta, near Jerusalem.

A Border Police force on Wednesday morning asked the group to leave the home, but they refused to comply with the request.

The group was led by rightist Aryeh King, who told Haaretz that the land was the property of Ramat Gan resident Eliyahu Cohanim, who gave them permission to enter and take control of it.

"We did this after the Arabs started this week to build an illegal structure on the spot, this is after the municipality has already demolished a structure on this property once before," King said.

King and the group had informed police in advance of their intention to enter the home, which is not connected to electricity or water. A number of days ago, Border policemen prevented the group from entering the property.

The Jerusalem municipality has in the past planned to build the Eastern Compound as a Jewish neighborhood and industrial area.

The Palestinian Authority has itself also submitted a program for construction in the area. In recent years there has been wider illegal Palestinian building in the area, including over Jewish-owned land.
