Knesset: State must help abductees' families fund release efforts
By Shahar Ilan, Haaretz Correspondent

The state is now obligated to help finance the families of abducted or missing Israelis in their efforts to see their loved ones returned, according to a law passed Tuesday in the Knesset plenum.

The Knesset unanimously approved in its second and third readings a bill proposing the fund the families efforts to secure their relatives' release. The law particularly relates to the families' trips abroad as part of this effort.

The law essentially gives legal representation to the families of the abductees.

The bill, initiated by MK Yisrael Hasson (Yisrael Beiteinu), stipulates that a committee be established to consider funding requests made by the families of missing soldiers, members of security forces, and civilians.

Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tzahi Hanegbi (Kadima) said after the Knesset issued its approval: "The law can't return the boys home but it can broadcast a message? Often these families travel abroad in order to seek support for the release of their loved ones. There is no reason that the expense should fall on the families."
