Palestinian man convicted of recruiting minister's assassins

The Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday morning convicted a Palestinian militant of recruiting and assisting the gunmen who assassinated then minister Rehavan Ze'evi in 2001.

Majdi Rimawi, an activist in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was convicted of finding the gunmen, supplying them with fake identification documents, and providing them with photos of the minister so that they could identify him.

He was also convicted on counts of attempted murder and of belonging to a terrorist organization. He showed no remorse for his actions.

"I'm not sorry and I have nothing to be sorry for," Rimawi told the court.

Six months ago the Jerusalem District Court sentenced one of Ze'evi's murderers, Bassel Asmar, to life in prison plus 20 years.

Asmar was convicted of the murder and of belonging to a terrorist organization, as well as for a number of attempted murders that year in which he rigged cars in Jerusalem with explosive devices.

Ze'evi, a former army general and leader of a small ultranationalist party was shot dead at Jerusalem's Hyatt hotel in Autumn 2001. He was known for his strong pro-settlement sentiments and for his controversial stance in favor of population transfer of West Bank and Gaza Palestinians.

On the day of the murder in the autumn of 2001, Asmar and Hamdi Qur'an ambushed the 75-year-old minister when he returned to his room at the Jerusalem Hyatt hotel.

According to their plan, Qur'an was to shoot the minister, while Asmar's role was to shoot Ze'evi's bodyguard, should he be accompanied by one. The two waited for Ze'evi in the emergency exit stairwell. When Ze'evi arrived, Qur'an shot him, and then both fled the scene through the emergency exit.

The court rejected the defense argument that Asmar was just an accessory to murder, saying he was "a full partner both in the planning phase and in implementation." The court ruled that Asmar worked closely with Qur'an to "implement these crimes."

The court pointed out that "the defendant even said that he was jealous of Defendant No. 1 [Qur'an], who won glory due to the fact that he was the one who shot Minister Ze'evi.
