Violent clash erupts between rightists and Bedouin near Jerusalem
By Jonathan Lis, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, right-wing activists

A violent clash erupted Tuesday afternoon between right-wing activists and a group of Bedouin near the outpost of the Jerusalem-area outpost of Maoz Esther.

Stones were thrown and blows exchanged in the clash, which left several people wounded. The activists, who were there as part of the Journey to the Land of the Hilltops tour, also fired shots in the air.

The Judea and Samaria District Police arrested five activists and two Bedouin suspected of involvement in the violence.

Last week, dozens of settlers participated in a rampage at several junctions in the northern West Bank, close to the settlement of Yitzhar. The disruptions began after a group of settlers were evacuated from a bus they had parked as an illegal residence at the Adei Ad outpost.

During that incident, a settler stole the weapon of an Israel Defense Forces soldier and fired five bullets in the air. Palestinian security officials claimed that some settlers remained in the area, smashing cars and windows in the West Bank village of Burin and cutting electricity wires.

Later that same day, a settler attacked an IDF soldier at the West Bank outpost of Havat Gilad, holding a knife to the soldier's throat and forcibly removing his helmet from his head. The attacker then fled the scene.

The incident occurred during a confrontation between settlers and Israeli soldiers in the area, west of Nablus. Other settlers at Havat Gilad set Palestinian olive groves on fire, sparking several field fires.

Last month, the outgoing commander of the Samaria Brigade, Col. Amir Baram, told IDF officers and officials of the State Prosecutor's Office that efforts should be made to "deal with provocateurs like [Kedumim Mayor] Daniella Weiss and Rabbi Gadi Ben-Zimra," who heads an Orthodox girls' high school in the northern West Bank settlement of Ma'aleh Levona.

At that meeting, Baram focused in particular on two yeshivas in the northern West Bank. One, called Dorshei Yihudcha, is located in Yitzhar and headed by Rabbi Yitzhak Shapira, an associate of Rabbi Yitzhak Ginzburg, who headed the Od Yosef Chai yeshiva that was formerly located at Joseph's Tomb in Nablus. Shapira is among the rabbis who signed a manifesto in support of the suspects in a brutal attack on two Arab youths on Holocaust Remembrance Day in May.

"The community's moderates are unable to exert their authority over the yeshiva boys, and there are many complaints in the area," Baram was quoted as saying. "Two yeshiva boys recently went into a nearby Palestinian village to set fire to Palestinian cars, but they were caught and beaten, and the army had to extricate them."

The second yeshiva is Shiru Lamelech, located at the Havat Gilad outpost. Baram said that a number of "problematic" youths study at that yeshiva.

Baram cited the illegal outpost of Shvut Ami as another source of problems, saying that stone-throwing by residents continues despite a permanent IDF presence there.
