Uzi Dayan joins Likud, says Netanyahu a worthy partner in battle against corruption

Politician and former head of the Central Command reserves general Uzi Dayan announced on Monday plans to join the Likud Party and run for a seat in the Knesset.

Dayan has based his political career on the battle against corruption and says that he sees the Likud Party and its leader Benjamin Netanyahu as trustworthy partners in waging his campaign for change.

"The Bibi [Benjamin] Netanyahu I know is a man who stands by his principles and can admit a mistake," Dayan said on Monday.

Since his retirement from the Israel Defense Forces, Dayan has served as the president of the Zionist council in Israel and in May 2005 he founded the Tafnit (turning point) party. However, the party failed to gain enough votes to secure a seat in the Knesset in the following elections.

After making his announcement Monday, Uzi Dayan was quick to point out that he has always been an independent politician beholden to no one, saying "I never carried out any negotiations, never, not with any group."

Despite declaring never to have negotiated, Dayan had reportedly contacted Ehud Barak after he was appointed leader of the Labor party in June 2007, in order to request he be placed on the Labor party Knesset list.

Dayan also made sure to note that although he is leaving the party for the Likud, Tafnit will remain independent and a factor in Israeli politics
