The body of an Israeli tourist missing in Laos was found on Monday in the Mekong River, where his kayak had capsized late last week.

Avner Bardugo's body was reportedly found by a local Laotian man who informed local authorities and an Israeli search team. Bardugo's family was notified on Monday.

Bardugo, 25, of Ramat Yishai, was a captain in the Israel Air Force. He went on leave for his trip out east, which began in early July and was scheduled to end six weeks later. Upon his return, he was to begin filling a new position in the IAF.

Bardugo went missing when his kayak hit a rock and capsized. His traveling companion escaped from the accident and helped coordinate the search effort.

Bardugo's comrades from the elite Israel Air Force rescue unit 669 headed for Laos on Sunday in efforts to locate their friend. Bardugo's family also paid for a helicopter to be sent to the scene of the accident to help with the search for Avner.

Bardugo's mother, Rama, described her son as "a friend to everyone and a true leader and survivor."
