VIDEO / MK Lieberman: Either charge me for corruption or drop case

Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday petitioned the High Court of Justice to instruct Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to either file an indictment over the ongoing investigation against him or dismiss the case.

Lieberman is suspected of illicit business dealings in Russia and corruption offenses related to election campaign funding in 1998 and '99. Police also suspect Lieberman of having taken hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bribes while serving as a cabinet minister from 2001 to 2004.

In the petition - which opens with the words "there has never been an incident like this in Israel's history" - Lieberman accuses the attorney general of an ongoing delay of justice.

Lieberman said that the prosecution and police are trying to draw out the investigation until the next elections. He added that one of the people interrogated was allegedly told by police that he had to help them arrest Lieberman, or face having him become the next prime minister.

Lieberman could potentially be charged with bribe-taking, fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and falsifying corporate documents.

In 2001 Lieberman was convicted in the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court for assaulting a 12-year-old boy from Tekoa who had beaten his son. Under a plea bargain, Lieberman was convicted of threatening and assaulting the boy and paid a fine of NIS 7,500 plus compensation of NIS 10,000.

Lieberman has claimed over the years that he is being persecuted by the police. In 1999 he called for establishing a state committee of inquiry to look into the conduct of the police investigations branch, and even initiated a permanent parliamentary committee that is supposed to monitor the sensitive police branch.
