Israeli and Syrian officials will meet for a fourth Turkish-brokered round of talks in Turkey early next week, Saudi newspaper Al-Watan reported yesterday, citing diplomatic sources in Damascus. Also this week, Dr. Samir Taqi, a senior scientist in a Syrian delegation visiting Washington, spoke at the Brookings Institution. Taqi said that when Syria thinks of an opportunity it thinks of Turkey. He also said Syria needed the U.S. to discuss the events in the region and to improve its relations with Egypt and Saudi Arabia. (Yoav Stern)

Netanyahu gets first security briefing

Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu met Labor leader Ehud Barak yesterday for a security update for the first time since Barak became defense minister. Their aides said they did not discuss political issues. Barak's aides said he thought such a briefing was important, even if not mandatory. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who is required by law to update the opposition leader monthly on security, last briefed him three months ago. Netanyahu yesterday also met with Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit, who is running for Kadima's leadership. (Mazal Mualem)

June traffic fatalities reach record high

Altogether 2,321 people were involved in accidents - 45 killed and 176 seriously injured. From November 2007 to June this year, the number of accidents has risen by an average of 0.6 percent a month, reversing the previous trend. (Moti Bassok)

MKs okay W. Bank homes despite vow to freeze settlements

A Knesset committee yesterday approved 20 new housing units at Maskiot in the West Bank despite a 2007 pledge to the United States to halt construction at the site, Israel Radio reported. Israel agreed to hold off on plans to build 180 new homes in the settlement as part of a general freeze on construction in the West Bank. But the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee has now given approval for the construction of the housing units, and Defense Minister Ehud Barak is slated to grant authorization soon. Immigrants believe public sees them as Russians, not Israelis

About 58 percent of immigrants from the former Soviet Union who have been in Israel more than 10 years feel that the Israeli public regards them as "Russians" rather than Israelis. A study initiated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee shows that the longer the immigrants stay in Israel the less they identify with Russia. But only about 18 percent feel that veteran Israelis see them as Israelis. Some 25 percent say they are discriminated against by the police, courts, employment service and Hebrew-language media because they came from Russia. The study was conducted among 1,025 immigrants by Professor Elazar Leshem of Hebrew University's School of Social Work. (Anshel Pfeffer)
