Bedbug basics
By Ofri Ilani

Bedbugs are egg-shaped insects, about 10.4mm in length. Unlike fleas, they do not jump, and are usually active at night.

"Bedbugs bite all parts of the body, and their bite is stronger and more irritating than an insect bite," says Dr. Kosta Y. Mumcuoglu, head of the Medical Entomology and Acarology Laboratory at Hebrew University.

Bedbugs are difficult to identify. Anyone who suspects they have been bitten should see a physician for the appropriate treatment.

If the bite is found to be that of a bedbug, a report should be filed with the ministry of health or environmental protection. The Health Ministry confirmed a significant, recent rise in bedbug reports.

"Until now we hardly saw bedbugs in Israel, perhaps only in prison cells. But recently we have had some incidents. Though not many, they were in places where we have not seen bedbugs before such as in private homes," says Dr. Laor Orshan of the ministry's entomological laboratory.

Dr. Orshan said bedbugs do not carry disease but are still hard to get rid of. "They hide in cracks at home and aren't easy to find. But something can be done. It's important that people send samples."
