Religious Zionists / Not by chance
By Nadav Shragai
Tags: religious zionists, Israel

It's no coincidence that men with knitted skullcaps - two of them soldiers - were involved in killing the terrorists who carried out the last three terror attacks. The only coincidence is the connection among the men themselves: David Shapira, who killed the perpetrator of the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva attack, is the brother-in-law of the soldier who shot and killed the perpetrator of the first bulldozer attack, and Yaakov Asael, the first person to shoot yesterday's attacker, taught that soldier at a Dimona yeshiva.

Many religious Zionists carry guns because they live in or frequently visit the West Bank. Many are well trained in the use of weapons because a relatively large number serve in combat units and tend to keep up their shooting skills afterward.

Above all, however, education and life circumstances both play a significant role in the willingness of those who don knitted kippot to kill terrorists.

Education also plays a role. Yeshiva high schools, hesder yeshivas (combining religious study with army service) and other religious Zionist educational institutions have for years revered such values as self-sacrifice, heroism and contributions to the common good. Their students do not take the existence of the State of Israel for granted. Instead, they are raised to revere heroes such as Roi Klein from the settlement of Eli, who was awarded the medal of valor for throwing himself onto a grenade during a battle in the Second Lebanon War, saving his soldiers' lives while sacrificing his own.
