Olmert gov't to hold first meeting on global jihad Wednesday
By Barak Ravid
Tags: terror, Mossad, global jihad

The security cabinet is to discuss Wednesday morning the threat of global jihad on Israel, the first time the Olmert cabinet has debated this issue thoroughly. The ministers will hear reports by the Mossad, the Shin Bet security service and Military Intelligence focusing on Al-Qaida and affiliated cells operating against Israeli targets and Jewish targets around the world.

Terrorist infrastructure and organizations motivated by Al-Qaida have recently proliferated and gained strength in the region.

In April, Al-Qaida deputy head Ayman al-Zawahiri declared the group would strike against Jews in Israel and outside it.

The Shin Bet will share its concerns over the establishment of Al-Qaida cells in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and among Israeli Arabs. A few days ago, a report was released discussing the arrest of six young Arab men from Nazareth, Taiba and East Jerusalem who were charged with membership in an Al-Qaida cell.

According to the indictment, the suspects were collecting intelligence ahead of a possible attack on the helicopter in which U.S. President George W. Bush was traveling during his last visit in Israel. Two young men from the Bedoiun town of Rahat were also arrested recently, charged with contacting Al-Qaida operatives over the Internet, and sending them possible targets for attack in Israel.

A number of extremist Islamic groups are also operating in the Gaza Strip, carrying out a number of attacks on international organizations, coffee shops and stores managed by Christians. The most prominent of these organizations is the Army of Islam, which also took part in the abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Other organizations whose strength has reportedly been increasing include the Army of the Nation and the Army of Believers-Al-Qaida in Palestine, which took part in an attack on the American School in Gaza.

Security officials have also been warning for some time of the intent of terror groups to kidnap Israelis in Sinai. Israel has information that an Al-Qaida-affiliated group is now in Sinai to carry out a kidnapping. A travel advisory has been issued against Israelis visiting Sinai.
