News in Brief

MKs Shelly Yachimovich (Labor) and Gideon Sa'ar (Likud) were livid yesterday at what they described as "piggish behavior" - plans to do away with extended maternity leave and grants for two or more children. The two MKs said that the draft of the Economic Arrangements Bill for 2009 includes such changes. However, they acknowledged that a similar proposal was raised in talks at the Prime Minister's Office on the 2009 budget. In 2007, the two MKs initiated a law increasing maternity leave to 14 weeks, up from 12. If stipends for more than one child are cut, the national coffers will save NIS 90 million per year. Matthieu Ricard, a scientist turned Buddhist monk and author, is coming to Israel next week. The French-born Ricard's best-selling books include "The Monk and the Philosopher: A Father and Son Discuss the Meaning of Life." Ricard obtained his doctorate in biochemistry from the Institut Pasteur in Paris at age 27 but for the past 30 years he has lived in the Himalayas, studying Tibetan Buddhism. He has been the French interpreter of the Dalai Lama since 1989. He will be lecturing at Jaffa's Noga Theater next Wednesday night on cultivating the internal conditions for genuine happiness.
