The Knesset will vote tomorrow on a bill which will allow the Knesset plenum to require the suspension of the prime minister for reasons of illness or police investigations. The Knesset House Committee enabled the preliminary vote on the proposed law yesterday after it exempted the bill from the normal waiting period before a vote.

Nonetheless, there is no chance the bill will be passed into law before the Knesset recesses next Wednesday for its summer vacation, and therefore it may not be relevant to Ehud Olmert. The proposal states a majority of 61 MKs could require the temporary suspension, and the prime minister could return to his post within 150 days only if at least 61 MKs vote to allow him to do so. he Knesset Finance Committee will convene in the next few days to approve Avishai Braverman (Labor) as its new chairman, in place of Stas Misezhnikov (Yisrael Beitenu). The Knesset House Committee voted yesterday to appoint Braverman to the post, with 16 MKs voting in favor, five against and two abstentions. Shas chairman Eli Yishai said the appointment crossed a red line, and that Shas no longer felt committed to the government coalition. (Zvi Zrahiya)

In 2007, traffickers in women received prison sentences on average of 2.8 years plus another 1.6 years of suspended sentences. The maximum sentence is 16 years. The Hotline for Migrant Workers report, written by attorney Nomi Levenkron, said 78 percent of the cases against such trafficking last year ended in a plea bargain. The average sentence in 2004 was 3.6 years, and rose to 4.6 years in 2005. (Ruth Sinai)

A Kiryat Gat woman poured a bucket of bleach on a social worker who had come for a home visit yesterday. The woman also bit and scratched the social worker, who received medical treatment and was released. The alleged attacker is a single mother whose four children were sent to a boarding school by court order. The social worker had come to the apartment to see whether the children could return home for the coming school year, after the mother refused to come to the welfare department's offices for a talk. The woman was arrested. Social workers will hold meetings around the country today to discuss how to defend themselves against such violence. (Ruth Sinai)

A 13-year-old girl from Mitzpe Hila in the Western Galilee was bitten Sunday night by a viper. She was hospitalized in moderate condition in the hospital in Nahariya in the pediatric intensive care unit. The girl said she went out to see why the dog had been barking for so long, and after calming down the dog, she stepped on something on her way back to the house - and felt a sting. She received anti-venom. This was the 10th case of snake bite in the Western Galilee so far this summer. (Jack Khoury)

The tracks of a female loggerhead sea turtle were found on Sunday on a beach near the Nahariya promenade, in a place where the deck of a restaurant stood until recently. An Israel Nature and Parks Authority ranger discovered the tracks on his daily survey of the beaches in the area. The INPA tried to locate the sea turtle nests and eggs, and transfer them to a protected hatching farm. While the turtle did not lay any eggs Sunday, it is expected to return within days and do so.
