Olmert's Kadima sets date for party leadership battle

After numerous delays, the Kadima council on Monday evening approved a change to party legislation that will allow leadership primaries to be brought forward and held in September.

A total of 91 of the 180 council members passed the proposal that has been the cause of bitter disagreement within Kadima as it is aimed at ousting the party's current chairman, Prime Minster Ehud Olmert.

The primaries will be held between the dates of September 14-18.

The council's decision stated that special circumstances justified the holding of early primaries for the position of chairman of the movement.

The move to unseat Olmert came in the wake of his becoming embroiled in a new corruption probe into suspicions that he illicitly received funds from an American Jewish businessman over the course of 15 years.

Over the last few days, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Public Security Minister Avi Dichter, who intend to run in the primaries, have spearheaded efforts to persuade council members to approve the vote.

Olmert's associates in Kadima have recently predicted that the prime minister will not run for the party leadership, despite his statements to the contrary.
