Israeli innovation helps chopper pilots see in worst conditions
By Channel 10 and Haaretz Staff
Tags: IAF, Helicopters, Dust-off
Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for July 21, 2008.

Elbit systems, one of Israel's largest defense electronics companies has developed a program called "Dust-Off" that uses lasers to pinpoint obstacles on the ground and sends the images in real-time directly to the pilot's helmet.

When landing in the field, helicopters kick up a great deal of dust into the air, severely limiting visibility. The situation is called a "brownout", and can put the lives of personnel both in the air and on the ground at risk.

Elbit systems and presumably helicopter pilots the world over hope the Dust-Off will help deal with this often life-endangering phenomenon.
